pen and paper
I don't know what time it was but it was a least kind of late. I was standing just like I do most of the time on the subway. Seated in front of me was a guy, probably in his fifties, drawing portraits on sheets of paper no large than 3 inches by 5 inches and next to him was a young attractive black lady. At first she would just sneak peaks at the guy's drawings but later she didn't even bother to try to hide her curiosity. He seemed unaware of his audience. He seemed only aware of the sheet of paper in front of him.
